Once you learn how to do letter and number balloon sculpture, you can truly brag to be in the big leagues of professional balloon decorating. As I always teach my 10-year old daughter, nothing is difficult if you know what you are doing. The same is held true for balloon decorating. I would be so bold as to say that there is a right and a wrong way of doing things which is the same as saying that there is a complicated way and a simple of way of doing something. Here I want to teach you “simple” and “effective”. I’ll let someone else teach you “complicated”.
The 4 Secrets of Doing Numbers and Letters with Balloons
Secret #1 – Always Use 5″ Latex Balloons – The choice of your size of balloon is the most critical decision in the selection of the most artistic medium to do this sculpture. The only size of balloon that will give you the most creative possibility is the 5″ latex balloon.
Secret #2 – Always Inflate Your 5″ Balloons With Air – The most important thing to know in ALL balloon number and letter sculpture is that you must always inflate your five-inch balloons with air and never with helium. When you use air, the balloon sculpture will last for weeks. Should you make the mistake of using helium, your balloons will deflate within 24 hours.
Secret #3 – Always Use 3/16″ Aluminum Rod for The Frame – You will obtain 3/16 inch aluminum rod which you can obtain from any Metal Company for which you can do a search on the internet for a company in your area. Do NOT settle for 1/2 inch aluminum rod. 3/16 inch rod is very malleable and bendable. 1/2 inch rod is very strong and almost impossible to bend. Make sure that if you get 14-foot pieces to cut each rod down to 12-foot pieces which will be your standard length for doing your letters or numbers. You can cut them yourself using bolt cutters – but NOT wire cutters.
Secret #4 – Shape Each Number And Letter To A Standard Height of 5 Feet – Your letters and numbers will stand 5 feet high. This makes it easier to price quote each number and letter, and aesthetically, your numbers and letters will always look great when they are placed along side each other with the exact same height.
